“Honor the past, seize the moment, embrace the future”. This phrase
describes the attitude of the people of Highway Mission Tabernacle.
Our church began on a Thanksgiving day way back in 1894! Members of
a group called “Cross and Crown” sensed from God that they could be more
effective united as a church, rather than just an organization. So, eight
courageous souls committed themselves to living like Jesus and sharing
the Good News of the Gospel throughout Philadelphia. Over the years,
the church grew and in 1960 purchased the beautiful church at 18th and
Spring Garden. We are located on a major east/west artery, just blocks
from the very center of Philadelphia.
We honor the people who have labored before us, however, our main
focus is on living in a “present tense” relationship with Jesus. I often
tell others, “We are an ordinary group of people who have been saved and
set free by our extraordinary Savior, Jesus Christ”! Our church is a
growing family of believers who love the Lord and each other. In 2007,
Highway Tabernacle, under the leadership of Pastor Otto Wegner, “adopted”
Resurrection Life Church in the Tioga neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Resurrection Life, pastored by Pastor Finney Kuruvilla, is one with
Highway and is the home of Spring Garden Academy, a quality Christian
school (grades K-8).
As Christians, we believe the future will always be
better than the past! With Jesus as the Head, we are confident of his
grace and power to enable us to make a difference in our city. Our mission
can be best described by, “Building a church family to transform a
community.” Pastor Mark, Terry, and their daughter, Nicole, arrived here
in Philadelphia in 2011. We are honored to love and serve Jesus and the
precious people of Philadelphia. “Following Jesus and loving others” is the
motto that ignites our hearts each day. Thanks for reading this
“big picture” overview of our story. Join us on the journey!
